Changing NYC schools: which transfer path is yours

Most of our guides walk you through the annual application, the once-a-year ranked match for a seat the following September. A transfer is the other road: your child is already enrolled, and you need to move them to a different school, often mid-year. The rules, the timing, and who decides are different from the main match, and they differ by grade. This page is the short map; pick the guide that matches your situation and it covers the specifics.

How a transfer is different from applying

• It happens outside the annual ranked match. You're not re-ranking a list of programs; you're requesting a change for a child who already has a seat.
• It's usually handled by your current school plus a Family Welcome Center, and requests are weighed case by case as seats allow, not by a citywide algorithm.
• The grounds and the levers change by grade. Some reasons for a transfer apply only at certain grade levels, which is exactly why there's a separate guide for each.
• A transfer is never guaranteed. The decision rests with the DOE, not the school you'd like to move to.

Which path is yours

Pick your child's grade. Each guide covers the grounds, the timing, and who decides for that level:

• Elementary (grades K–5): changing elementary schools, including the grounds specific to the youngest grades.
• Middle school: switching middle schools mid-year and how those requests are weighed.
• High school: changing high schools, plus transfer high schools (District 79) for students who are over-age and behind on credits.
